Content region: local sites and sensible defaults
WidgetStore recommends popular sites, the default search engine, share buttons and widget defaults like city and currency based on your content region. Learn how it is detected and how to change it.
What you need depends on where you are. A start page opened in Tokyo should suggest Yahoo! JAPAN, LINE and Rakuten; in London, BBC and Amazon UK; in Hong Kong, LIHKG, HK01 and WhatsApp. WidgetStore uses your content region to decide these recommendations, rather than simply translating the same list.
What the content region changes
- Start page: the sites in new start page templates, the popular sites in the "Add" panel (with filters like Social, Video, Shopping and AI), and the default search engine (Google everywhere except mainland China, where it is Baidu; Japan also offers Yahoo! JAPAN, Taiwan and Hong Kong offer Yahoo).
- Onboarding: sites are suggested from what is popular in your region and your interests, and "Social links" suggests the platforms people use there (for example X, Instagram, LinkedIn, GitHub, YouTube and TikTok globally; X, Instagram, note and LINE in Japan). Tap one to add it.
- Share buttons on the blog, help center and invite page: X, Facebook, Reddit, LinkedIn and WhatsApp globally; LINE, X and Hatena Bookmark in Japan; LINE, Facebook and Threads in Taiwan; WhatsApp, Facebook and Threads in Hong Kong.
- Widgets: the widget library lists widgets made for your region first and folds widgets made for other countries (such as another country's public holidays) at the end. New widgets start with local defaults for city, currency, first day of the week and the 12-hour clock, which you can change.
Start pages, pages and widgets you have already made stay exactly as they are when you change regions.
How the automatic region works
Unless you pick one, your content region is set automatically:
- Your display language decides first: English (and languages we have not translated yet, like Korean or French) → Global, Japanese → Japan, Traditional Chinese → Taiwan, Simplified Chinese → Mainland China.
- Where you are only refines it within the same language: English in the United States → United States, in the United Kingdom → United Kingdom; Traditional Chinese in Hong Kong or Macau → Hong Kong.
Change your content region
- Sign in, open your avatar menu and go to "Settings" → "Profile".
- Under "Content region", choose Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, United States, United Kingdom or Other regions (global). Choose "Automatic" to go back to automatic detection.
The change applies right away and is saved to your account, so it follows you to other devices. The display language is set separately from the language menu in the top bar.
